Belva Lockwood Homestead

Located in the Royalton Ravine Park are the ruins of the Belva Lockwood Homstead. Lockwood was born in Royalton in 1930 and, after attending college, was appointed principal of the former Lockport Union School District. She went on to attend law school at George Washington University and, five years after graduating, became the first woman to practice law before the United States Supreme Court and be admitted to the bar of the United States Court of Claims. She became active in the women’s rights movement and in 1884 and 1888, she was nominated to seek the presidency by the Equal Rights Party. Although unsuccessful, she became remained politically active: advocating for international peace in the later years of her life.

Royalton Ravine Park is located on Gasport Rd. in Gasport, NY 14067. Visit the website http://www.niagaracounty.com/Parks/royaltonravine.asp for more information.
