Presidents in Buffalo Exhibit Summary

In 2013, prior to President Obama’s visit to Buffalo, the Buffalo News asked the Buffalo Presidential Center how many Presidents have visited the city?  Since we could not give a definitive answer, we decided to thoroughly research the topic.  We learned that at least 33 and perhaps as many as 35 Presidents have visited (or lived in) Buffalo and Western New York (including north into Niagara County and south to the Chautauqua Institution).

Since the Buffalo Presidential Center and several of its Trustees have an extensive collection of Presidential campaign memorabilia, and since it does not yet have a permanent home to display these items, it seemed logical to collaborate with another Buffalo museum partner to exhibit original presidential artifacts during the 2016 campaign season.

We were invited by Joe Dispenza, President of Forest Lawn Cemetery, to exhibit the collection in the new Margaret L. Wendt Archive and Resource Center.  With eye-catching visual appeal and easy access to all, it was the perfect venue.  Rare and unusual artifacts, along with historical information and documents associated with all the Presidents who have visited or lived in Buffalo, were on display.

Special attention was given to the Forest Lawn “residents,” Millard Fillmore and Shirley Chisholm, along with other Presidents of Buffalo prominence: Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.  Additionally, there were 5 more display cases featuring campaign memorabilia from James Monroe (1817) through Barack Obama (2012).

The presidential campaign season no doubt influenced the traffic and success of the exhibit, as more than 1000 people viewed the exhibit during that period from September 9 through December 20, 2016.

Both the ABPC and Forest Lawn Cemetery want to acknowledge and thank all of the partners who contributed time and resources to the exhibit: Cohen and Lombardo, P.C. Attorneys at Law, Western New York Heritage Press, Buffalo Geological Society, Arch in the Buff, Karpeles Manuscript Museum, the Buffalo History Museum and the American Political Items Collectors.

Individuals who contributed artifacts included: Trustees, Mark Evans, Brad Hunt and Bren Price; George Cleveland, Stephen Cohen & Bros., John Vargo, and JoEtte Mosey Zaccagnino. Also assisting were Donald Freedman, Tom Richardson, Craig Posmantur, and the dedicated staff at the Wendt Center, Sandy Starks, Rich Ruhl, Matt Golebiewski and Laurie Muldoon.

Finally, we send a Distinctive Note of Appreciation to Scott Alexander Wood Design, who created and designed all of the informational panel boards for the exhibit.
